PSG 5–2 Chelsea: Carragher Says Blues Must Fix Goalkeeper Problem to Compete at the Top

Former Liverpool defender and football pundit Jamie Carragher believes Chelsea F.C. cannot compete with Europe’s elite clubs unless they resolve their ongoing goalkeeping issues.
Carragher’s comments came after Chelsea suffered a heavy 5–2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 tie.
The game turned dramatically after a costly mistake by Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jørgensen while the score was level at 2–2.
Costly Goalkeeping Error Changes the Match
Chelsea were performing well in Paris and had matched PSG for long periods.
However, the match shifted when Jørgensen attempted to play the ball out from the back under pressure. His risky pass near the edge of his penalty area was intercepted by PSG forward Bradley Barcola.
Barcola quickly set up midfielder Vitinha, who calmly chipped the ball into the net to make it 3–2 for PSG.
From that moment, Chelsea’s defence collapsed as the French champions added two more goals to seal an emphatic victory.

Carragher: Chelsea “A Million Miles Off” the Elite
Speaking on CBS Sports, Carragher acknowledged that Chelsea actually played well tactically but insisted defensive errors continue to undermine the team.
“Chelsea didn’t deserve to lose 5–2, but they only have themselves to blame.
They can’t go any further until they sort the goalkeeping position out.”
Carragher noted that despite the club’s massive investment under their new ownership, the goalkeeper situation remains unresolved.
“They’ve spent billions and have some great players, but mistakes at centre-back and goalkeeper will keep costing them. When you’re trying to win the Premier League and Champions League, you can’t afford that.”
Rosenior Accepts Responsibility
Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior defended his tactical approach after the game and took responsibility for the mistake.
Rosenior had chosen Jørgensen ahead of regular starter Robert Sánchez, believing the Danish goalkeeper’s ball-playing ability would help Chelsea play through PSG’s aggressive press.
According to Rosenior, risk is part of Chelsea’s playing style.
“You have risks playing every way you play. You can kick long and it comes straight back, or you build from the back. I take responsibility for that.”
The manager also revealed that Jørgensen apologised to his teammates in the dressing room after the match.

Chelsea’s Performance Showed Promise
Despite the heavy defeat, there were encouraging signs for Chelsea.
The Blues caused serious problems for PSG’s defence and controlled several phases of the match. According to Rosenior, Chelsea generated strong attacking opportunities but were punished by clinical finishing from the French champions.
He pointed out that PSG scored five goals from just 0.8 expected goals (xG) — an unusually efficient performance.
Still, defensive mistakes proved decisive.
Big Response Needed Against Newcastle
Chelsea will have little time to recover as they face Newcastle United F.C. in the Premier League this weekend.
The match will be a key test of the squad’s mentality following the disappointing European defeat.
Rosenior has called on his players to show resilience and bounce back quickly.
“This is a big test of our character. I want to see a real reaction in the next game.”
Second Leg Still to Come
Although the 5–2 scoreline puts PSG in a commanding position, the tie is not completely over.
Chelsea will host the second leg at Stamford Bridge, where they must produce a major comeback to keep their Champions League hopes alive.
For now, however, the spotlight remains firmly on Chelsea’s goalkeeping dilemma — a problem many analysts believe must be solved if the club wants to challenge for major trophies again.
