The Ministry of Health Ghana has recruited 6,245 nurses and midwives as part of a nationwide employment exercise aimed at strengthening primary healthcare delivery across Ghana, especially in underserved and rural communities.
The large-scale recruitment initiative forms part of the government’s broader free primary healthcare agenda, which seeks to improve access to quality healthcare services while addressing persistent staffing shortages within the health sector.
The announcement was made during a press briefing in Accra by Frederick Mensah-Acheampong, Director of Human Resources at the Ministry of Health. He described the process as highly competitive due to the overwhelming number of qualified applicants seeking employment opportunities within the healthcare system.
Recruitment Targets Primary Healthcare Expansion
According to the Ministry, the recruitment exercise was carefully designed to support the government’s Primary Healthcare policy, which places strong emphasis on preventive healthcare, community-based medical services, and improved healthcare accessibility across the country.
Out of 6,500 available nursing and midwifery slots, 6,245 positions were successfully filled. The remaining vacancies are expected to be addressed through a mop-up exercise in the coming weeks.
The Ministry noted that many of the newly recruited nurses and midwives will be posted to underserved districts where healthcare facilities continue to struggle with inadequate staffing levels.
Strengthening healthcare at the community level remains one of the government’s top priorities as authorities work toward improving maternal health, child healthcare, disease prevention, and emergency medical services nationwide.

Thousands of Additional Health Professionals Recruited
Beyond nurses and midwives, the recruitment process also included several other healthcare professionals across different disciplines.
The Ministry confirmed the recruitment of:
- 771 allied health professionals out of 900 available slots
- 235 pharmacy professionals out of 250 available positions
- 300 physician assistants
These additions are expected to help ease pressure on healthcare facilities while improving service delivery across hospitals, clinics, and community health centers throughout the country.
The recruitment exercise was made possible after the Ministry of Finance Ghana granted financial clearance for the hiring of approximately 8,000 health workers nationwide.
Addressing Ghana’s Growing Health Workforce Challenges
Despite the recruitment drive, the Ministry acknowledged the ongoing challenges facing Ghana’s healthcare employment sector.
According to Frederick Mensah-Acheampong, more than 105,000 trained but unemployed health professionals remain without permanent jobs across the country. Many of these individuals reportedly completed their training as far back as 2018 and 2019 and have been waiting years for recruitment opportunities.
The growing backlog has generated widespread concern among healthcare graduates, professional associations, and training institutions.
Mr. Mensah-Acheampong admitted that the recruitment process has created significant anxiety among unemployed professionals due to the limited number of available positions compared to the large pool of applicants.
However, he emphasized that the Ministry remains committed to gradually absorbing more qualified health workers as financial conditions improve and additional clearances are secured.
Northern Ghana Vacancies to Be Filled Through Mop-Up Exercise
Although the recruitment exercise was largely successful, the Ministry revealed that approximately 87 nursing vacancies remain unfilled in some northern districts.
Officials explained that several eligible applicants were unable to complete parts of the recruitment process, resulting in a small number of open positions.
To address the situation, the Ministry plans to conduct a mop-up exercise in the coming weeks to allow qualified candidates another opportunity to secure employment.
This additional recruitment phase is expected to help ensure that remote communities, particularly in northern Ghana, receive the healthcare personnel needed to improve service delivery and reduce pressure on existing staff.
Healthcare Recruitment Seen as Major Boost for Ghana’s Health Sector
Healthcare experts and stakeholders have welcomed the recruitment exercise, describing it as an important step toward improving Ghana’s healthcare system.
Many public health analysts believe increasing staffing levels at the primary healthcare level will significantly improve early disease detection, maternal and child healthcare, vaccination coverage, and health education within local communities.
The deployment of more nurses, midwives, physician assistants, and allied health professionals could also reduce overcrowding in referral hospitals by strengthening healthcare delivery at the district and community levels.
The initiative aligns with Ghana’s broader efforts to achieve universal health coverage while improving healthcare outcomes nationwide.
Hope for Unemployed Health Professionals
While thousands of healthcare workers have now secured employment, many unemployed professionals continue to hope for future recruitment opportunities.
Professional bodies within the healthcare sector have repeatedly called for increased government investment in health employment to absorb the growing number of trained graduates entering the system each year.
For many successful applicants, however, the latest recruitment exercise represents a major breakthrough after years of waiting for permanent postings.
As Ghana continues working to strengthen its healthcare system, the recruitment of more frontline workers is expected to play a crucial role in improving healthcare access and ensuring better health outcomes for citizens across the country.
