Aggrey Memorial

The Ghana Police Service has arrested six students from Aggrey Memorial Senior High School in connection with a violent attack on a final-year student of Adisadel College in Cape Coast.

The incident occurred after an inter-colleges sports festival and has triggered a police investigation, raising fresh concerns about student violence associated with inter-school events in the Central Region.

How the attack happened

According to police reports, the incident took place on Friday, February 20, 2026, at about 3:30 p.m. The victim, identified as Rexford Owusu-Ansah, was returning to campus with two friends after the final day of sports activities at the Cape Coast Stadium.

While passing through Pedu Junction, the three students were reportedly intercepted by a group of suspects believed to be students of Aggrey Memorial Senior High School.

The attackers allegedly stopped the group and questioned them to confirm whether they were students of Adisadel College. After identifying them, the suspects reportedly launched a targeted assault.

Owusu-Ansah’s two friends managed to escape from the scene, but he was overpowered by the attackers, knocked to the ground, and severely beaten.

Robbery and injuries

In addition to the physical assault, the attackers allegedly robbed the victim of several personal belongings, including:

  • An iPhone 17 Pro Max
  • GH¢1,400 in cash
  • His pair of shoes

The victim sustained serious injuries during the attack and was first treated at the stadium clinic before being referred to the Cape Coast Regional Hospital for further medical care.

Medical reports confirmed that Owusu-Ansah suffered a fractured bone around his right eye, an injury severe enough to prevent him from opening the eye immediately after the assault.

After receiving treatment and medical observation, he was discharged from the hospital on Sunday, February 22, 2026.

Suspects handed over to police

Authorities at Aggrey Memorial Senior High School later handed over the six juvenile suspects to the Kotokuraba Police Station at about 7:30 p.m. on the day of the incident.

The victim’s two companions have informed investigators that they are able to identify the suspects, which is expected to support the ongoing investigation and possible prosecution.

Police condemnation

In a statement signed by Acting Head of Public Affairs ASP Patrick Bentum, the Central Regional Police Command strongly condemned the attack and assured the public that the suspects would face due legal process.

Police emphasized their zero-tolerance stance on violence and warned students against engaging in criminal acts, particularly during inter-school activities.

Summary

The arrest of six Aggrey Memorial Senior High School students over the assault on an Adisadel College final-year student underscores growing concerns about student safety during inter-school events in the Central Region. The violent attack, which included physical assault and robbery, has sparked public outrage and highlights the urgent need for stricter supervision, security measures, and educational programs on conflict resolution in schools.

Authorities have pledged a thorough investigation, and the suspects are expected to face the full rigours of the law, sending a strong message that such behaviour will not be tolerated. The incident also serves as a reminder to parents, school authorities, and event organizers to remain vigilant and proactive in preventing violence at school competitions. It further raises awareness about the broader issue of student misconduct and the importance of instilling discipline, respect, and sportsmanship among young people to ensure a safe learning and extracurricular environment.

This case adds to recent patterns of inter-school violence in Ghana, reinforcing the need for comprehensive strategies to protect students and maintain order during school sporting events.
