Championship playoffs Six teams to battle for promotion as English Football League introduces new eliminator round to boost competition and drama.
Clubs in the English Football League (EFL) have approved a proposal to expand the EFL Championship playoffs from four teams to six, starting from the 2026/27 season.
The decision was confirmed at a general meeting on Thursday and is aimed at increasing competitive intensity towards the end of the campaign, while offering more clubs the opportunity to fight for promotion to the Premier League.
Championship playoffs: How the new format will work
Under the revised structure:
- Teams finishing fifth and sixth will play seventh and eighth in one-leg eliminator matches.
- The winners of those ties will advance to the two-legged semi-finals, where they will face the teams that finished third and fourth in the league standings.
- The two semi-final winners will then compete in the traditional Championship play-off final at Wembley Stadium, where the final promotion spot to the Premier League will be decided.
The EFL has indicated that full scheduling details and the final structure of the concluding stages will be confirmed at a later date.
A boost for competition
EFL chief executive Trevor Birch said the expansion is designed to enhance the excitement and competitiveness of the Championship.
He noted that since their introduction in the 1986/87 season, the play-offs have become one of the most dramatic fixtures in the English football calendar, often described as the “richest game in football” because of the financial rewards tied to promotion.
With the new structure featuring seven matches in total, league officials believe the format will:
- Keep more clubs in contention later into the season
- Increase fan engagement
- Add further drama and high-stakes football to the promotion race
What it means for clubs
The change means that finishing eighth in the Championship could now be enough to keep promotion hopes alive. Supporters are likely to see tighter battles in mid-table positions, as more teams remain mathematically in contention deep into the campaign.
For clubs chasing promotion, the road to the Premier League will become longer — but also more accessible.
The new era of Championship play-offs begins in 2026/27, promising even greater drama on the road to Wembley.
