Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has launched a strong criticism of Mohamed Salah after the Egyptian forward publicly questioned Liverpool’s style of play under manager Arne Slot ahead of his final appearance for the club.
Carragher described Salah’s latest comments as “selfish” and said he was not surprised the departing forward chose to create controversy during a critical moment in Liverpool’s season.
The remarks come just days before Salah is expected to play his final game at Anfield after confirming he will leave Liverpool this summer.
Salah’s ‘Heavy Metal Football’ Remark Sparks Debate
The controversy began after Liverpool’s 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa, when Salah posted a statement on social media that many interpreted as a direct criticism of Arne Slot’s tactical approach.
In the post, Salah appeared to call for a return to the aggressive “heavy metal football” style that became synonymous with Jurgen Klopp’s successful Liverpool era.
The 33-year-old suggested that every player joining Liverpool should embrace that identity and implied that moving away from it “cannot be negotiable.”
His comments immediately triggered intense reactions among fans and pundits, with many questioning the timing of the statement as Liverpool continue battling for Champions League qualification.
Carragher: “This Should Be About Liverpool FC, Not Salah FC”
Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher criticised Salah for placing attention on himself instead of the club during an important stage of the season.
“I’m not surprised,” Carragher said. “I told everybody something else would come before the end of the season.”
The former Liverpool defender compared the situation to Cristiano Ronaldo’s controversial departure from Manchester United, suggesting Salah intentionally dropped “another bomb” before leaving.
Carragher said the comments reflected behaviour he had previously labelled as selfish.
“Less than two years ago, I called him selfish for doing an interview and I think that rings true again,” he stated.
He added that Liverpool’s focus should remain on securing Champions League football rather than internal drama surrounding Salah’s exit.
“Liverpool have a really important week. They are still not fully qualified for the Champions League and it should be about Liverpool FC, not Salah FC,” Carragher said.
Tensions Between Salah and Slot Had Been Growing
Salah’s latest comments are the latest chapter in what has become an increasingly strained relationship between the player and Liverpool manager Arne Slot.
Slot was officially announced as Jurgen Klopp’s replacement in May 2024. Initially, Salah publicly praised the Dutch coach for adapting quickly to English football.
However, tensions reportedly began to emerge during the 2025 season.
In November 2025, Slot controversially dropped Salah for a Premier League match against West Ham after Liverpool endured a difficult run of form.
The following month, Salah openly criticised the manager, claiming he had been “thrown under the bus” and revealing there was “no relationship” between them.
Despite signing a two-year contract extension in April 2025 as Liverpool secured their 20th league title, the relationship between player and coach reportedly never fully recovered.
In March 2026, Liverpool announced Salah would leave the club a year earlier than expected.
Should Salah Be Dropped for His Final Match?
The timing of Salah’s comments has now created a major dilemma for Arne Slot ahead of Liverpool’s final Premier League game against Brentford.
Liverpool may still need a positive result to guarantee qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League depending on results elsewhere.
Former England captain Wayne Rooney suggested that he would bench Salah if he were manager.
Carragher, however, believes Slot cannot afford to let emotions interfere with football decisions.
“I don’t believe any manager should ever cut off his nose to spite his face,” Carragher explained.
“If playing Mo Salah gives Liverpool the best chance of winning the game, you have to pick him.”
Carragher acknowledged that while Salah’s actions may have been damaging, the manager’s responsibility is to prioritise the club’s immediate objectives.
“Arne Slot can’t be selfish, he has to think of the club, what’s best for the club,” he added.
Carragher Suggests Fans Could Turn on Slot
Carragher also warned that dropping Salah could create further problems for Slot with Liverpool supporters.
He argued that the manager is currently not in a strong position with sections of the fanbase, making Salah’s public criticism even more damaging.
“Arne Slot is not in a position of great strength at Liverpool at the moment, and that’s why Salah made his comments,” Carragher claimed.
According to Carragher, Salah understands the emotional connection he has with supporters and knows many fans will expect him to receive a proper farewell at Anfield.
“If he doesn’t give him the send-off, I think the fans will turn even more,” Carragher warned.
Gary Neville Also Criticises Salah
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville also criticised Salah’s remarks, describing them as disruptive and poorly timed.
“He’s pulled the pin out of a grenade right in the middle of the room,” Neville said.
Neville argued that if Salah had been a Manchester United player, he would have been furious over the comments.
“If he was a Manchester United player, I’d be fuming,” he said.
However, Neville admitted that players with Salah’s status are difficult to silence.
“If they’ve got something to say, they’re going to say it and they’re going to say it at the point where you don’t want to hear it,” he added.
Salah’s Legacy at Liverpool Remains Massive
Despite the controversy, Salah leaves Liverpool as one of the club’s greatest players in modern history.
Since arriving from AS Roma in 2017, he has helped Liverpool win:
- The Premier League
- UEFA Champions League
- FA Cup
- League Cup
- FIFA Club World Cup
His goalscoring record and influence transformed Liverpool back into one of Europe’s elite clubs under Jurgen Klopp.
However, his final weeks at Anfield have now become overshadowed by growing tension with the new managerial era under Arne Slot.
