Ken Ofori Atta Detained by ICE in the US: The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has reportedly taken former Ghanaian Minister for Finance, Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta, into custody over questions surrounding his current immigration status in the United States.
This development was disclosed in a public notice issued on January 7 by his legal representatives, Menka-Premo, Osei-Bonsu, Bruce-Cathline and Partners. According to the statement, Mr. Ofori-Atta’s US-based legal team is actively engaging with ICE officials and remains confident that the matter will be addressed swiftly.
The lawyers explained that Mr. Ofori-Atta has filed a pending application for adjustment of status, a legal process under US immigration law that permits an individual to remain in the country beyond the expiration of their original visa while the application is under review. They emphasized that such procedures are common and lawful within the United States immigration framework.
The legal team further assured the public that Mr. Ofori-Atta is fully cooperating with ICE authorities and has consistently demonstrated respect for the law throughout the process.
Meanwhile, the former Finance Minister is also being sought by Ghana’s Attorney-General and the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) in connection with alleged offences linked to high-profile matters, including the SML deal and the National Cathedral project.
Mr. Ofori-Atta is currently in the United States to receive medical treatment for a long-standing health condition, a fact his lawyers have cited as the reason for his absence from Ghana. Although assurances have previously been given that he would return to face the ongoing investigations, recent developments surrounding his detention by ICE have raised fresh concerns about whether he will be able to return to Ghana in the immediate future.
The situation continues to attract significant public and political attention, as both immigration and legal proceedings unfold across jurisdictions. Further updates are expected as engagements with US immigration authorities’ progress.
