Manchester City

Manchester City have confirmed the signing of England defender Marc Guéhi from Crystal Palace, completing a deal worth an initial £20 million, with a percentage sell-on clause included. The 25-year-old has put pen to paper on a five-and-a-half-year contract, keeping him at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2031.

Guéhi’s arrival comes amid an injury crisis in City’s defensive ranks and marks another significant addition to Pep Guardiola’s evolving squad, with the club’s total transfer expenditure over the last 12 months now surpassing £425 million.

City Move Swiftly Amid Defensive Injuries

Manchester City’s pursuit of Guéhi accelerated rapidly after long-term injuries sidelined key centre-backs Rúben Dias and Joško Gvardiol, leaving Guardiola short of experienced defensive options during a crucial phase of the season.

Although Guéhi’s contract at Selhurst Park was due to expire at the end of the campaign — making him eligible for a free transfer in the summer — City opted to act decisively in January, securing the Palace captain ahead of rival interest.

The defender had come close to joining Liverpool on Deadline Day last summer in a £35m deal, while Arsenal and Bayern Munich were also monitoring his situation. City’s willingness to negotiate a mid-season fee ultimately proved decisive.

Guéhi: “I’m at the Best Club in England”

Speaking for the first time since completing his move, Guéhi expressed pride and excitement at joining the Premier League champions.

“I am really happy and incredibly proud to be a Manchester City player,” he said.
“This move feels like the culmination of all the hard work I have put into my career. I am now at the best club in England and part of an unbelievable squad of players.

“I want to grow as a player and a person, and I know at this club that’s going to happen. I absolutely cannot wait to get started, understand what the manager expects of me, and show the City fans what I can do.”

A Proven Leader Entering His Prime

Guéhi arrives at City as a fully established Premier League defender, having captained Crystal Palace and cemented his place as a regular in the England national team. His composure on the ball, positional intelligence, and leadership qualities align closely with Guardiola’s tactical demands.

City’s director of football Hugo Viana hailed the signing as a major coup.

“Marc has been one of the best defenders in English football for quite some time now,” Viana said.
“He is only 25 but already a leader, a brilliant professional and someone desperate to improve. He is strong, intelligent, and reads the game exceptionally well. Marc is entering the prime years of his career, and we’re thrilled he chose Manchester City.”

Bargain Deal with Huge Upside

Sky Sports’ Peter Smith described the transfer as a “bargain-buy”, noting the contrast between Guéhi’s modest personality and the magnitude of the deal.

Despite his understated demeanor, Guéhi is widely regarded as a locked-in starter for England at the upcoming World Cup, and his move to City is seen as both a short-term solution to injuries and a long-term cornerstone of Guardiola’s defence.

While he primarily played in a back three at Palace, Guéhi’s experience on the left side of a centre-back pairing for England makes the transition to City’s system a natural one.

Palace Fallout and Glasner’s Anger

Guéhi’s departure has not been without controversy. Crystal Palace head coach Oliver Glasner publicly criticised the club’s hierarchy for sanctioning the sale so close to a match, describing his squad as “completely abandoned” following a defeat to Sunderland.

“Selling our captain one day before a game — there is no understanding for this,” Glasner said, later confirming he will leave the club at the end of the season.

City’s January Business Continues

Guéhi becomes Pep Guardiola’s second signing of the January window, following the £64m arrival of winger Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth. His signing takes City’s total spend in the past year to £445.9m across 15 players, underlining the club’s aggressive rebuild as they target continued domestic and European dominance.

What Comes Next?

With Guéhi now in place, City have secured a defender entering his peak years — one capable of immediate impact and long-term leadership. For Guardiola, it represents not just a response to injuries, but an investment in the next phase of Manchester City’s success.

For Palace, it marks the end of an era — and the loss of a captain whose rise has now taken him to the very top of English football.
