Mekies Warns RB Will Start 2026 on the Back Foot

New team principal Laurent Mekies, who replaced Christian Horner mid-way through 2025, has openly admitted that Red Bull may struggle early in the season as they adapt to building their own engine.

Mekies emphasized that developing a power unit from scratch presents enormous challenges and warned fans to expect a steep learning curve. He stressed that Red Bull will likely trail established manufacturers initially but expects rapid development throughout the year.

The 2026 season will also be Red Bull’s first without Christian Horner or long-time advisor Dr Helmut Marko, both of whom departed in 2025. Additionally, legendary designer Adrian Newey is no longer involved, making the RB22 the first RB car produced entirely without his input.

Key Dates: F1 2026 Testing and Season Opener

Due to the scale of regulation changes, Formula 1 has scheduled three pre-season tests:

• Barcelona (private): January 26–30
• Bahrain: February 11–13 and February 18–20

The 2026 Formula 1 season begins with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne from March 6–8, with the opening race taking place on Sunday, March 8.
