Carabao Cup

Carabao Cup: Antoine Semenyo continued his dream start at Manchester City, scoring again as Pep Guardiola’s side claimed a crucial 2–0 away victory over Newcastle United in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final. However, the win was overshadowed by a lengthy and controversial VAR decision that sparked strong reactions from Guardiola and pundits alike.

Semenyo Makes Instant Impact for Manchester City

Semenyo wasted no time announcing himself at his new club, opening the scoring at St James’ Park with a composed finish after a slick move involving Jeremy Doku and Bernardo Silva. The goal marked Semenyo’s second in as many appearances, making him the first City player to achieve that feat since Emmanuel Adebayor in 2009.

Moments later, Semenyo thought he had doubled both his tally and City’s lead, cleverly converting from a corner. Celebrations were cut short when referee Chris Kavanagh was called to the pitch-side monitor following a prolonged VAR review.

VAR Drama Dominates Semi-Final First Leg in Carabao Cup

The decision centered on Erling Haaland, who was judged to be marginally offside and interfering with defender Malick Thiaw near the goal line. Despite the contact appearing minimal, VAR ruled that Haaland impeded play. After nearly six minutes of deliberation, Kavanagh disallowed the goal, branding it a “subjective offside.”

The delay caused frustration among fans, players, and commentators. Former England international Jamie Redknapp criticized the stoppage, arguing that VAR has failed to enhance the game and instead disrupts its flow.

Cherki Seals Advantage in Injury Time

City’s persistence eventually paid off deep into stoppage time. In the ninth minute of added time, Rayan Cherki calmly swept the ball past Nick Pope, giving Manchester City a commanding two-goal cushion ahead of the second leg at the Etihad Stadium.

History strongly favors Guardiola’s men—every away team to win the first leg of a League Cup semi-final since the 1980s has gone on to reach the final.

Guardiola Voices Frustration Over VAR Decisions

Despite the win, Guardiola was visibly unhappy with VAR’s role in the match. The City boss referenced previous decisions at St James’ Park, including what he felt were clear penalties not given earlier in the season.

Guardiola argued that VAR reviews taking up to nine minutes undermine the authority of on-field referees and disrupt momentum. While he acknowledged City must adapt, he insisted consistency and speed are essential if VAR is to serve the game effectively.

Newcastle Rue Missed Chances

Newcastle had opportunities to change the outcome, with Bruno Guimarães hitting the post and Yoane Wissa forcing a fine save from James Trafford. However, the Magpies failed to capitalize, becoming the first team this season not to score at home against Manchester City.

Manager Eddie Howe admitted his side showed late-game naivety, especially when pushing forward in the final moments and conceding Cherki’s decisive goal.

Praise for Cherki and Semenyo

Pundits were quick to applaud City’s new signings. Redknapp labeled Cherki the “signing of the season,” praising his creativity and flair, while Semenyo spoke glowingly about the confidence and support he has received since joining the club.

“The environment here is perfect,” Semenyo said, adding that he’s playing with freedom and enjoying every moment at City.

What’s Next?

The second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final takes place next month at the Etihad, where Newcastle face an uphill task. The Magpies haven’t won there since 2014, and City now hold a significant psychological and statistical advantage.
