Ghana Ambassador

Ghana Ambassador to the United States of America, Victor Smith, has confirmed the arrest and detention of former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, in the United States.

In a statement issued on January 15, 2026, Ambassador Smith disclosed that Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu was arrested by the US Marshals Service on January 6, 2026, and has since been held at a detention facility in the US.

According to the Ambassador, her arrest followed an extradition request submitted to US authorities in July 2024 by Ghana’s former Attorney-General under the Akufo-Addo administration.

“Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu is currently in detention and awaiting her day in court,” the statement said.

US assures Ghana of cooperation on extradition

The development follows recent assurances by the United States government that it will not obstruct Ghana’s efforts to extradite the former MASLOC boss.

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, revealed that the assurance was given during a high-level bilateral engagement between Ghanaian officials and a US delegation led by the Acting US Ambassador to Ghana, Rolf Olson.

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, formed part of a broader review of Ghana–US bilateral relations.

Mr Ablakwa disclosed the outcome in a Facebook post on Wednesday, January 14, stating that the US had reaffirmed its commitment to cooperating fully with Ghana’s extradition request.

Background to the case

Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, a former MASLOC Chief Executive Officer, was sentenced in absentia in April 2024 by an Accra High Court to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour.

She was found guilty on 78 counts, including:

  • Causing financial loss of approximately GH¢90 million to the state
  • Stealing
  • Money laundering
  • Conspiracy to steal
  • Breaches of public procurement laws

Her accomplice, Daniel Axim, a former operations manager at MASLOC, was also convicted and sentenced to five years in prison.

During the trial, Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu sought and was granted permission to travel to the United States for medical treatment but failed to return. The court subsequently proceeded with the case in her absence.

An arrest warrant was issued by the Accra High Court, and she was declared a fugitive.

Extradition process ongoing

In December 2025, reports indicated that US authorities were completing final checks to facilitate her extradition to Ghana.

Her arrest by the US Marshals marks a significant step toward bringing the former MASLOC boss back to Ghana to serve her sentence.
