Daily Collagen Supplements May Boost Skin Health — But They Won’t Erase Wrinkles

Collagen Supplements: New scientific review finds collagen improves skin elasticity and joint health, but experts caution it’s not a miracle anti-ageing cure.
Taking daily collagen supplements may improve skin elasticity and hydration, but they will not completely prevent wrinkles, according to a new scientific review published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum.
Researchers analysed 113 clinical trials involving nearly 8,000 participants and concluded that collagen pills and powders can offer “legitimate” skin benefits when used consistently over time. However, they stress that these supplements are no quick fix and should not be viewed as a cure-all for ageing.

What the Review Found
Collagen is a protein naturally produced by the body that helps maintain the strength and structure of skin, bones, cartilage, tendons and nails. From early adulthood, collagen production gradually declines, and existing collagen breaks down more quickly. Factors such as smoking, sun exposure and hormonal changes — particularly around menopause — can accelerate this process. Researchers note that women may lose up to a third of their skin collagen around menopause.
The review found that consistent collagen supplementation can:
- Improve skin elasticity
- Increase skin hydration
- Enhance overall skin tone
- Reduce joint pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis
However, the evidence does not support claims that collagen can completely stop wrinkle formation.
“Not a Cure-All”
One of the lead investigators, Lee Smith, a professor at Anglia Ruskin University, emphasised that collagen’s benefits are real but modest.
“Collagen is not a cure-all, but it does have credible benefits when used consistently over time, particularly for skin and osteoarthritis,” he said.
The researchers also cautioned that many existing studies were funded by supplement manufacturers, which may have contributed to exaggerated marketing claims. Importantly, the new review itself was not industry-funded.
Various forms of collagen supplements exist — including marine, bovine and vegan options — but the review did not find strong evidence that one type performs better than another.
Diet Still Matters
Experts say supplements are only one piece of the puzzle. Bridget Benelam from the British Nutrition Foundation highlighted the importance of a skin-friendly diet.
Vitamin C, found in citrus fruits, berries, peppers and green vegetables, supports collagen formation. Zinc — present in meat, poultry, cheese, nuts, seeds and wholegrains — also plays a role in collagen production. For those following plant-based diets, protein-rich foods such as beans and lentils provide the amino acids necessary for the body to produce its own collagen.
While many collagen supplements are derived from animal products, vegan alternatives are increasingly available.
Call for Further Research
Tamara Griffiths, president of the British Association of Dermatologists, welcomed the findings but called for more targeted and robust dermatological research to strengthen the evidence base.
Collagen supplements may support healthier-looking skin and reduce joint discomfort when taken consistently. However, they are best viewed as part of a broader approach to healthy ageing — alongside sun protection, balanced nutrition and overall lifestyle care — rather than as a miracle solution for wrinkles.
