Arsenal Miss Opportunity to Open 8-Point Lead After Goalless Draw with Liverpool

Arsenal missed the chance to move eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table after being held to a frustrating 0–0 draw by Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners came into the contest in buoyant form, having won their previous five league matches, and were presented with a golden opportunity to strengthen their title charge after closest rivals Manchester City and Aston Villa both dropped points earlier in the week. However, Mikel Arteta’s side were unable to capitalize on Liverpool’s attacking limitations and had to settle for a share of the spoils.
First-Half Control but No Cutting Edge
Arsenal dominated possession and territory in the opening 45 minutes, pinning Liverpool deep in their own half and repeatedly delivering crosses into the penalty area. Despite the sustained pressure, the hosts lacked a decisive touch in front of goal, with several inviting deliveries flashing across the face of goal without being attacked.
Ironically, it was Liverpool who fashioned the clearest chance of the first half. A moment of hesitation between Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya and centre-back William Saliba allowed Conor Bradley to pounce, with the full-back lifting a clever chipped effort that struck the crossbar.
That scare aside, Liverpool largely struggled to gain a foothold in the game. Arne Slot’s side were forced to play without a recognised striker following Hugo Ekitike’s absence through injury, leaving midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai and Florian Wirtz to operate as the most advanced players.

Liverpool Grow Into the Game
The balance of play shifted after the interval, with Liverpool showing greater attacking intent and composure in possession. Arsenal’s earlier dominance faded, and the visitors began to ask more questions in the final third.
Liverpool felt they had a strong case for a penalty when Wirtz went down under a challenge from Leandro Trossard, but the referee waved away the appeals. Szoboszlai later went close with a dangerous free kick as the visitors sensed an opportunity to snatch all three points.
Despite Arteta introducing attacking reinforcements including Gabriel Jesus, Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli, Arsenal failed to regain control of the match. Liverpool remained the more threatening side in the second half, exposing the hosts’ lack of urgency and creativity.
Flashpoint in Stoppage Time
Tensions flared late in stoppage time when Martinelli attempted to push Conor Bradley off the pitch after the Liverpool defender went down near the touchline with a painful knee injury. The incident sparked a brief melee involving players from both sides.
Martinelli was shown a yellow card, while Bradley was eventually stretchered off the pitch, covering his face with his hands, adding a sour note to an otherwise disciplined contest.
Arsenal Analysis: A Missed Opportunity?
While Arsenal remains in an excellent position at the summit of the table, this result may feel like a missed opportunity come May. Facing a Liverpool side without a recognized center-forward, the Gunners arguably could and perhaps should have been more proactive.
Summer signing Viktor Gyökeres endured a particularly disappointing evening. Withdrawn in the 64th minute, the striker failed to register a single shot despite numerous crosses entering dangerous areas. The lack of movement and anticipation in the box was a recurring theme and ultimately cost Arsenal a potential victory.
That said, with a six-point cushion at the top and rivals failing to apply consistent pressure, this draw may not prove costly. However, games like these often define title races.
Liverpool Analysis: Signs of Progress Under Slot
Liverpool’s performance, particularly in the second half, suggested a team gradually finding its rhythm under Arne Slot. Despite being second-best early on, the Reds showed resilience and tactical discipline, improving markedly after the break.
Their unbeaten run now stretches to nine matches in all competitions, and while a title challenge may be unrealistic this season, Liverpool could still play a decisive role in shaping the destination of the trophy.
What’s Next?
Arsenal turn their attention to the FA Cup with an away trip to Portsmouth on Sunday (14:00 GMT), while Liverpool host Barnsley at Anfield on Monday evening (19:45 GMT).
