England edge past Italy to reach T20 World Cup Super 8s

England booked their place in the T20 World Cup Super 8s after a tense 24-run victory over Italy in Kolkata. A late batting surge from Will Jacks and crucial wickets at the death helped England avoid a major upset against the tournament debutants.
Jacks’ late fireworks rescue England
England’s innings looked shaky at 107-5 in the 13th over, with most of the top order getting starts but failing to convert them into big scores.
Jacks turned the match around with a blistering 53 not out from 22 balls, smashing boundaries in the final overs to lift England to a competitive 202-7.

- Tom Banton – 30 off 21
- Phil Salt – 28 off 15
- Sam Curran – 25 off 19
England piled on 95 runs in the last seven overs, turning a modest total into a daunting target.
Italy threaten historic upset
Italy’s chase started disastrously as Jofra Archer struck twice in the opening over. At 22-3, the game looked over.
However, a stunning partnership between:
- Ben Manenti – 60 off 25
- Justin Mosca – 43 off 24
put Italy right back in contention. The pair added 92 runs in just 48 balls, shifting the pressure onto England.
England hold their nerve at the death
With 30 needed from the last two overs, the match was still in the balance.
- Curran conceded just five runs in the penultimate over.
- Jamie Overton sealed the win with two wickets in the final over.
Italy were eventually bowled out for 178, falling 24 runs short but earning respect for their spirited performance.
What the result means
- England finish with three wins from four matches and progress to the Super 8s.
- Italy and Scotland are eliminated from the tournament.
- England are likely to face Pakistan, New Zealand, and either Zimbabwe or Sri Lanka in the next round.
Key concern for England
Despite qualifying, England’s performances have been inconsistent:
- Several batters have failed to convert starts.
- Jos Buttler continues to struggle for form.
- Bowling at the death has looked vulnerable at times.
They will need significant improvement to challenge for a third T20 World Cup title.
