The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has confirmed that government plans to facilitate the presence of Ghanaian supporters at the upcoming FIFA World Cup, stressing that the scale of the initiative will depend largely on the amount of funding raised.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa 94.7 FM in Accra, the Minister said there is a clear policy decision for Ghana to be represented in the stands by its supporters as the Black Stars compete on the world’s biggest football stage. However, he noted that financial considerations will determine how many fans can ultimately make the journey.

According to Adams, a fundraising committee has already been put in place and tasked with mobilising resources to support the travel, accommodation, and logistical needs of supporters who will travel to cheer the national team.

He explained that sending fans to an international tournament of this magnitude requires significant investment, which makes it impractical for government to shoulder the full cost alone. As a result, authorities are actively seeking support from outside government.

“This is why we are calling on corporate institutions, private companies, mining firms, and well-meaning individuals to contribute towards this national effort,” the Minister said, adding that broad-based support will be crucial to the success of the plan.

Kofi Adams clarified that discussions are still ongoing, and no fixed number of supporters has been determined. He emphasized that the approach being adopted is deliberately realistic, noting that the number of fans who will travel will increase in proportion to the funds raised.

The Minister further highlighted the importance of having Ghanaian supporters present at major international tournaments, describing fan support as a key source of motivation for players and a powerful symbol of national unity.

He assured the public that government remains committed to ensuring transparency and accountability in the fundraising process, while also ensuring that public funds are used responsibly.

The initiative, he said, is aimed at striking a balance between offering strong backing to the Black Stars on the global stage and maintaining fiscal discipline at home.
