Manchester United’s recent improvement has coincided with the return of Kobbie Mainoo to the starting lineup, and his performances are already raising questions about former manager Ruben Amorim’s reluctance to trust the young midfielder.
Mainoo’s influence in United’s midfield has been clear since Michael Carrick took charge. The academy graduate has started all four Premier League matches under the new manager, with the team winning each of those games. His seamless return to the side has not only strengthened the midfield but also brought renewed optimism among supporters eager to see homegrown talent thrive.
From Benchwarmer to Key Starter
During Amorim’s tenure, Mainoo struggled for opportunities. Despite growing excitement around his potential, the youngster did not receive a single Premier League start under the former boss. Amorim had openly expressed doubts about certain midfield combinations, particularly the idea of pairing Mainoo with veteran Casemiro.
However, Carrick has taken a different approach. Since his arrival, he has trusted the young midfielder immediately, and the decision has paid off. Mainoo’s partnership with Casemiro has provided stability and balance, allowing the team to control matches more effectively.
The new midfield setup has also benefited captain Bruno Fernandes. With Mainoo and Casemiro handling deeper responsibilities, Fernandes has been able to operate in a more advanced role—his preferred position—where his creativity can have a greater impact.

A Standout Display Against Tottenham
Mainoo’s performance in the victory over Tottenham highlighted just how influential he can be. The 20-year-old completed 33 passes in the final third, the highest total recorded by any player in that Premier League round of fixtures. It was also significantly more than he had managed in any previous top-flight match.
His composure on the ball, intelligent positioning, and ability to link play were key to United’s control of the game. Even though Tottenham were reduced to 10 men, Mainoo’s contribution was central to United’s dominance.
Casemiro also impressed alongside him, with the pair forming what Carrick described as a crucial part of the team’s ability to dictate the tempo.
Carrick’s Faith Paying Off
Carrick has spoken highly of Mainoo’s qualities, praising his calmness and technical ability.
He noted that it is not easy for a young player to regain rhythm after a period without regular minutes, but Mainoo has adapted quickly. According to Carrick, the midfielder’s confidence on the ball and understanding of the game make him a pleasure to watch, and he believes the youngster will continue to improve with time.
At just 20 years old, Mainoo still has significant room for development. Carrick has urged patience, emphasizing that expectations should be managed as the midfielder continues to grow.
A Talent Nearly Overlooked
Mainoo’s current form has sparked debate about how his situation was handled under the previous regime. There was a growing concern among fans that the academy product might become another promising talent overlooked by the club.
Instead, Carrick’s decision to reintegrate him into the starting lineup has reminded everyone of his ability and potential. His performances have not only strengthened the team but also boosted morale among supporters who value the club’s tradition of promoting youth.
What It Means for United Going Forward
With four consecutive wins since Mainoo’s return, Manchester United appear to have rediscovered balance in midfield. The combination of youth and experience, alongside the tactical adjustments under Carrick, has given the team a more cohesive structure.
Mainoo’s resurgence suggests that he could become a central figure in United’s long-term plans. It also raises the question of whether things might have been different had he been trusted earlier.
For now, though, the young midfielder is making the most of his opportunity—and proving that sometimes, all a promising player needs is belief from the manager.
