New Patriotic Party

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has initiated internal disciplinary processes that could lead to the expulsion of former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, following what it describes as disparaging public comments against the party’s leadership and internal structures.

In a statement signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP said the conduct and recent utterances of the renowned heart surgeon are “highly reprehensible and inimical to the values, unity and integrity of the Party.”

The move follows an interview Prof Frimpong-Boateng granted on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Monday, January 12, 2026, during which he delivered a scathing critique of the party he once served at the highest levels of government.

According to the NPP, the former minister’s remarks undermine party cohesion and violate provisions of its constitution, making disciplinary action unavoidable.

‘This is not the NPP I knew’

During the interview, Prof Frimpong-Boateng questioned the authenticity of the current NPP, arguing that it no longer reflects the ideals on which it was founded.

“The present New Patriotic Party is not New Patriotic Party. It is fake. From what I see now, this is not the NPP I used to know,” he said, adding that what he considers the “real” party now exists only in the background.

He further raised concerns about the party’s internal democratic processes, particularly the election of its most recent presidential candidate. According to him, the process was marred by intimidation, bribery and manipulation of delegates, developments he warned could entrench corruption within the party.

Prof Frimpong-Boateng linked these alleged irregularities to the New Patriotic Party’s poor performance in the most recent general elections, accusing the party of failing to undertake an honest assessment of the reasons for its defeat.

He cautioned that re-electing former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as flagbearer without addressing the underlying challenges would be a “trainwreck.”

While stressing that his criticism was not personal, he said that although Dr Bawumia is “a very nice person,” personal disposition alone is insufficient to lead the country at a critical moment.

Disciplinary process underway

The NPP says it has begun the appropriate internal procedures in line with its constitution, though it remains unclear how quickly the process will be concluded or whether Prof Frimpong-Boateng will formally respond to the party’s actions.

The development adds to growing internal tensions within the party as it reorganises following its electoral defeat and prepares for leadership contests ahead of the 2028 general elections.
