New START

New START Treaty: The impending expiration of the last remaining nuclear arms control agreement between the United States and Russia has sparked growing global concern about a possible new nuclear arms race. The Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, widely known as New START, was signed in 2010 to limit the risk of nuclear conflict and promote transparency between the world’s two largest nuclear powers.

Under the agreement, both countries were restricted to 1,550 deployed strategic nuclear warheads, while also committing to data sharing, advance notifications, and on-site inspections. These measures helped build trust and prevent misunderstandings that could escalate into conflict. With the treaty now nearing its end, analysts fear that decades of arms control cooperation dating back to the Cold War era may be coming to a close.

Religious and political leaders have voiced concern. Pope Leo recently urged Washington and Moscow to renew the agreement, emphasizing the urgent need to prevent another global arms race given the tense international climate.

New START Treaty

New START followed earlier agreements between the United States and the Soviet Union. The original START treaty, signed in 1991, imposed stricter limits of up to 6,000 nuclear warheads per country. Although New START was technically suspended several years ago, both nations were believed to have largely complied with its restrictions until now.

The treaty’s expiration also reflects a broader decline in international arms control frameworks. Several other major agreements have already collapsed in recent years, including the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, the Open Skies Treaty, and the Conventional Armed Forces in Europe Treaty — all of which once played key roles in reducing military tensions and promoting stability.

Security experts warn that the erosion of these agreements increases global risk. Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, the United Kingdom’s former military chief, has cautioned that the structures that once helped maintain international security are weakening, making the world more vulnerable to nuclear escalation.

Russian official Dmitry Medvedev, who signed the New START treaty while serving as president in 2010, has described its expiration as alarming. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has taken a more relaxed stance, suggesting that if the agreement ends, a new and potentially improved deal could eventually replace it.

However, negotiations remain complex. The United States has pushed for China’s inclusion in any future treaty due to its growing nuclear arsenal, while Russia argues that European nuclear powers such as the United Kingdom and France should also be part of future negotiations.

Experts note that both Washington and Moscow are already modernizing their nuclear forces and investing heavily in advanced military technologies. New weapons systems — including hypersonic missiles capable of extreme speeds and advanced defence-evading technologies — are raising concerns that strategic competition is intensifying rather than slowing down.

Analysts warn that expanding military capabilities and rising geopolitical tensions could make future arms control agreements more difficult to achieve. With more countries viewing nuclear weapons as essential deterrents, the global security environment is becoming increasingly unstable.

Although a new treaty remains possible, observers say there is little urgency from either side to reach an immediate agreement. As a result, the expiration of New START may signal the beginning of a more unpredictable and potentially dangerous era in global nuclear security.
