England XI: England are set to return to Test cricket this summer following a disappointing away Ashes campaign, with a three-match home series against New Zealand starting at Lord’s on Thursday, June 4. With questions lingering over leadership, selection, and squad balance, changes appear inevitable—but how might England shape up?
Coaching and Leadership Uncertainty
By the time England take the field at the Home of Cricket, it remains unclear whether Rob Key and Brendon McCullum will still be steering the Test side. Regardless of who is in charge, the series against the Black Caps represents a fresh start and an opportunity to reset after a difficult winter.
Opening Batters: Time for Change?
England’s opening partnership struggled badly in Australia. Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett both failed to deliver consistently, with Duckett not passing 42 in 10 innings and Crawley enduring a nightmare start that included two first-over ducks in Perth.
Continuity may still favor Crawley, but Duckett could make way. One strong contender is Asa Tribe, the 21-year-old Glamorgan batter who impressed with a century for England Lions against Australia A in Brisbane. Tribe’s recent form across formats, including in the SA20, has caught the attention of selectors and former England captain Kevin Pietersen.
Other names hovering around the conversation include Ben McKinney (Durham) and Tom Haines (Sussex).
Middle Order: Stability with a Hint of Youth
At No. 3, Jacob Bethell looks assured of his place after scoring his maiden first-class century in the fifth Ashes Test in Sydney. His emergence offers England much-needed balance at the top of the order.
Joe Root remains a guaranteed selection at No. 4 and continues his pursuit of cricketing history, closing in on Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time Test run record. With a busy home summer ahead, Root has a real chance to narrow the gap significantly.
Harry Brook should retain his place at No. 5, though the heavy workload across formats may prompt discussions around rest. Ben Stokes, meanwhile, is expected to continue as captain at No. 6 as he looks to guide the team into its next phase despite Ashes disappointment.
Wicketkeeper: Fresh Start Behind the Stumps?
The Ashes proved a difficult tour for Jamie Smith, whose batting returns and glove work came under scrutiny. Following his omission from England’s white-ball squads, a break from Test cricket seems likely.
James Rew appears well-placed to step in. The Somerset wicketkeeper-batter boasts impressive county numbers and offers flexibility with the bat. A return for Ben Foakes—still regarded as England’s best pure wicketkeeper—also remains a possibility if selectors prioritize stability.

Spin Department: Rehan Ahmed’s Opportunity
England’s struggles with spin bowling in Australia highlighted a long-standing issue. With Shoaib Bashir out of favor and Will Jacks not fitting the role of frontline spinner, Rehan Ahmed could finally secure a consistent Test role.
The leg-spinner has impressed in county cricket not only with the ball but also with the bat, scoring multiple centuries last season. His all-round ability could prove vital on English pitches.
Fast Bowlers: Competition Wide Open
England’s pace attack was heavily affected by injuries during the Ashes. While Brydon Carse and Josh Tongue emerged with credit, others failed to leave a lasting impression.

A home summer offers opportunities for bowlers to force their way into contention, but Carse, Tongue, and Sam Cook look strong candidates to start the New Zealand series. Cook, despite limited Test exposure, has an outstanding county record that may earn him another chance.
Others on the radar include Matthew Fisher, Josh Hull, Olly Stone, Eddie Jack, and Sonny Baker, depending on fitness and early-season form.
