Swedru: Three students of Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS) are set to appear before court after their alleged involvement in the violent assault of a student from Obrachire Senior High Technical School during a district inter-schools athletics competition in Agona Swedru in the Central Region.

The arrests were confirmed by the Ghana Police Service Central Regional Command, which disclosed that the suspects Joseph Amoh, 20, Benedict Appiah, 18, and Bilal Mamud, 18 are currently in police custody and will soon be arraigned before court to face charges related to the assault.

Police investigation and arrests

According to a statement issued on Tuesday, February 24, the arrests followed high-level engagements between the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, and the management of SWESBUS.

Later that same evening, authorities of Swedru School of Business handed the three suspects over to the Swedru Divisional Police Command at about 9:00 pm.

Police investigations indicate that the suspects were allegedly involved in the attack on a student of Obrachire Senior High Technical School during the district athletics competition, an incident that has sparked public concern and widespread condemnation.

The Central Regional Police Command strongly condemned the violent conduct and warned students and members of the public against engaging in acts that threaten safety and discipline within educational institutions.

Victim demands justice

The victim, identified as Akpekakovi Fiadzigbe, has called on authorities to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

According to the student, the attack happened without any provocation while he was searching for a place to sit and apply medication to his injured eye during the sports event.

He explained that the assault occurred suddenly and unexpectedly.

“They threw stones at me when I was looking for a place to sit to use the medicine on my eye. It happened unexpectedly. I didn’t do anything,” he said in an interview after being discharged from hospital.

The student added that he initially did not realise what was happening until stones began hitting him and other students started running for safety.

Serious injuries reported

The assault resulted in serious injuries, including the loss of a tooth and multiple facial wounds after stones were allegedly thrown at him by a group of students.

A video of the incident, which has since gone viral on social media, reportedly shows several individuals pelting stones at the victim, with some suspects allegedly stepping on his neck while others fled the scene.

The disturbing footage has triggered widespread public outrage and renewed calls for stricter discipline and improved security during inter-school sporting competitions.

Rising concern over school violence

The incident has highlighted growing concerns about student violence during inter-school events in Ghana, particularly athletic competitions that attract large crowds of students from different schools.

Education stakeholders and parents have increasingly called for stronger supervision, improved security arrangements, and stricter sanctions to prevent similar incidents in the future.

With the suspects expected to face court soon, many observers say the case could serve as a test of accountability and discipline within Ghana’s secondary school system.

Authorities have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that anyone found culpable will be made to face the full rigours of the law.

The arrest and impending prosecution of the three Swedru School of Business students marks a significant step toward justice for the assaulted Obrachire Senior High Technical School student. The case has drawn national attention and underscores the urgent need to curb violence in schools and ensure that students feel safe during academic and sporting activities.
