Liverpool Have £50m Yankuba Minteh Bid Rejected as Salah Replacement Search Intensifies

Liverpool have had a £50 million offer for Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh rejected as Andoni Iraola steps up his search for a new wide attacker following Mohamed Salah’s departure from Anfield.
Liverpool’s attempt to strengthen their attack before the summer transfer window closes has suffered a setback after Brighton & Hove Albion rejected a £50m bid for Yankuba Minteh.
The 22-year-old Gambia international has emerged as one of several attacking players being considered by the Reds as they attempt to reshape their forward line.
Replacing Mohamed Salah’s influence has become one of Liverpool’s biggest priorities, and the club’s interest in Minteh suggests they are exploring both established stars and younger Premier League-proven alternatives.
However, Brighton’s rejection indicates Liverpool may have to significantly increase their offer if they want to take Minteh to Anfield.
Why Liverpool Want Yankuba Minteh
Minteh fits several important requirements for Liverpool.
Primarily a right winger, the Gambian provides pace, direct running and the ability to attack defenders one-on-one.
Those qualities are particularly relevant following Salah’s departure.
Liverpool are not going to find a simple like-for-like replacement for one of the greatest forwards in the club’s modern history. Instead, Iraola may need to restructure the attack around players offering different combinations of speed, creativity and goals.
Minteh has recorded 10 goals and nine assists in 73 appearances for Brighton, giving him valuable Premier League experience despite being only 22.
He also has significant room for development.
Brighton Have Already Made a Significant Investment in Minteh
Brighton’s reluctance to accept £50m is understandable when Minteh’s age, potential and contract value are considered.
The Seagulls paid Newcastle United approximately £30m for the winger in 2024.
Selling him for £50m would already generate a sizeable profit, but Brighton have developed a reputation for refusing to sell valuable players unless their valuation is met.
That approach has helped the club generate substantial transfer income while continuing to identify and develop young talent.
Liverpool therefore face a familiar challenge for any Premier League giant attempting to buy one of Brighton’s most valuable players: the Seagulls rarely need to sell cheaply.
Minteh’s Injury Adds Another Factor
There is another complication.
Minteh is currently recovering from a leg injury sustained during Brighton’s friendly against Roma earlier this month.
Liverpool will naturally want clarity about his recovery before committing significantly more than their initial £50m offer.
However, their willingness to submit such a substantial bid despite the injury suggests their interest is serious.
If medical assessments indicate that Minteh’s recovery is progressing normally, the injury may not prevent Liverpool from returning with another proposal.
Mohamed Salah’s Departure Has Left a Huge Gap
Liverpool’s urgency in the transfer market becomes much easier to understand when considering what they have lost.
Salah was far more than Liverpool’s starting right winger.
For years, he provided goals, assists, creativity, consistency and an enormous attacking threat from the right side.
Replacing that production with one signing would be extremely difficult.
Liverpool may instead attempt to spread the responsibility across several attacking players.
That makes the profile of their recruitment particularly interesting.
Rather than simply searching for the biggest available name, the Reds appear to be considering players who could fit Iraola’s tactical approach and continue developing at Anfield.
Minteh fits that description.
Liverpool Already Signed Victor Munoz
Liverpool have not been inactive this summer.
The club completed the £34m signing of Victor Munoz from Osasuna, adding another versatile option to Iraola’s attack.
Munoz can operate on the wing or through the middle, giving Liverpool greater flexibility across their forward line.
But his arrival has clearly not ended the club’s search.
Liverpool still want another high-quality wide attacker before the transfer window closes.
That search has taken them from Brighton to Paris.
Bradley Barcola Remains Priority Target
While Minteh is firmly under consideration, Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola remains a priority target for Liverpool.
The 23-year-old France international would represent a major statement signing.
There is one enormous obstacle: the price.
PSG are reportedly demanding approximately £145m for Barcola.
Liverpool’s valuation is significantly lower, with the Reds believed to be more comfortable negotiating around the £100m mark.
A difference of approximately £45m means the two clubs remain some distance apart.
However, one factor potentially working in Liverpool’s favour is the player’s position.
Barcola is reportedly open to moving to Anfield.
That does not guarantee a transfer, but player interest can become important during the final stages of negotiations.
£145m for Barcola or an Improved Bid for Minteh?
Liverpool now face a fascinating transfer decision.
Do they dramatically increase their offer for Minteh?
Do they continue negotiating with PSG in an attempt to bring Barcola’s valuation down?
Or do they turn towards another target altogether?
The financial difference could be enormous.
Even if Brighton demanded substantially more than Liverpool’s rejected £50m offer, Minteh could still cost considerably less than Barcola.
That would leave additional resources to strengthen other areas of Iraola’s squad.
Barcola, on the other hand, could potentially offer the higher immediate ceiling but would require one of the biggest investments in Liverpool’s history.
How Minteh Could Fit Into Iraola’s Liverpool
Minteh’s playing style could make him an intriguing option under Andoni Iraola.
The manager’s football places considerable emphasis on intensity, movement and attacking quickly when opportunities appear.
Minteh’s pace makes him dangerous when space opens behind opposition defences.
He is also comfortable attacking from wide areas and driving directly towards defenders.
At 22, he remains young enough to improve his decision-making and final product.
His existing Premier League experience would also reduce some of the uncertainty associated with signing a player directly from another European league.
He understands the physical demands and speed of English football.
That could make him a relatively low-risk option compared with other young players from overseas.
But Can Minteh Replace Salah?
This is where expectations need to be realistic.
Minteh should not be judged against Mohamed Salah’s extraordinary Liverpool record.
Very few players could survive that comparison.
Salah developed into one of the world’s most productive forwards, consistently delivering elite goalscoring numbers while remaining a major creative threat.
Minteh’s current numbers 10 goals and nine assists across 73 Brighton appearances are much more modest.
But Liverpool would not necessarily be purchasing the finished product.
They would be betting on development.
The question is whether Iraola and Liverpool’s coaching staff believe Minteh can turn his speed and attacking ability into significantly greater goal contributions.

Brighton Hold a Strong Negotiating Position
Liverpool’s biggest difficulty may simply be convincing Brighton to sell.
The Seagulls have repeatedly demonstrated that they are prepared to hold firm when negotiating transfers involving their most valuable players.
Minteh is young, already experienced in the Premier League and capable of becoming considerably more valuable if his development continues.
Brighton therefore have little reason to accept an offer they consider below market value.
Liverpool’s £50m proposal has established their interest.
Their next move will reveal just how much they believe Minteh is worth.
Liverpool Cannot Afford to Rush the Salah Succession Plan
Replacing a club legend is one of football’s most difficult recruitment challenges.
Liverpool need another winger, but making an expensive signing simply because the transfer deadline is approaching could create bigger problems.
The club needs to identify a player who fits Iraola’s system while possessing the potential to become a long-term attacking leader.
Minteh represents one approach: Premier League experience, youth and development potential.
Barcola represents another: greater proven attacking quality at an elite European club, but at an extraordinary price.
There may yet be other candidates.
Liverpool’s willingness to explore multiple options suggests they understand the importance of getting the decision right.
What Happens Next?
The final days before the 1 September transfer deadline could become increasingly important for Liverpool.
Brighton have rejected the opening £50m offer, but that does not necessarily mean negotiations are over.
Liverpool could return with an improved bid.
At the same time, discussions surrounding Barcola could continue if PSG show any willingness to reduce their £145m valuation.
The possibility of another target emerging should not be ruled out either.
What appears increasingly certain is that Liverpool want another winger.
Salah’s departure has created a major vacancy in the attack, and Iraola appears determined to address it before the window closes.
Whether the answer is Yankuba Minteh, Bradley Barcola or another late-window target could become one of the defining transfer stories of Liverpool’s summer.
