Cole Palmer

Cole Palmer delivered a dazzling performance as Chelsea opened the new Premier League season with an entertaining victory over Fulham, giving new manager Xabi Alonso the perfect start to life in English football.

Chelsea’s new era under Xabi Alonso began with excitement, attacking quality and a few defensive warning signs as the Blues overcame neighbours Fulham in a dramatic west London derby at Craven Cottage.

The standout performer was undoubtedly Cole Palmer.

The 24-year-old playmaker created Chelsea’s opening goal after just 31 seconds before scoring what proved to be the decisive strike himself in the second half.

New signing Morgan Rogers also marked his Premier League debut for Chelsea with a goal, while Joao Pedro continued to demonstrate why Alonso’s attacking options could make Chelsea one of the most dangerous teams in the division this season.

Fulham, however, refused to make the occasion comfortable.

Teenager Josh King produced an outstanding midfield performance and scored an impressive equaliser, while summer arrival Gonzalo Garcia also found the net on his Premier League debut.

Chelsea ultimately held on to secure their first victory in an opening Premier League fixture since the 2022-23 season.

Cole Palmer Sends Immediate Warning to Premier League Rivals

Much of the pre-season discussion surrounding Chelsea focused on the attacking combination of Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro and Morgan Rogers.

It took less than a minute for that excitement to appear justified.

Palmer produced a clever flick to release Joao Pedro, who gave Chelsea the lead after only 31 seconds.

It was the type of instinctive attacking move that highlighted the understanding Xabi Alonso hopes to develop between his forwards.

Cole Palmer was at the centre of almost everything Chelsea did well.

His movement between the lines repeatedly caused Fulham problems, while his passing and ability to accelerate attacks made him extremely difficult to contain.

He then completed his performance with a composed finish through Bernd Leno’s legs.

For Chelsea supporters, it was an immediate reminder of how influential a fully fit Palmer can be.

Palmer Looks Refreshed After Difficult Previous Campaign

Palmer’s performance was particularly encouraging after the difficulties he experienced last season.

Fatigue and injuries disrupted his campaign and eventually contributed to him missing out on Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup plans.

Against Fulham, however, he looked sharp, confident and creative.

That will be hugely encouraging for Alonso.

Chelsea possess considerable attacking depth, but Palmer remains the player capable of transforming a match through one moment of imagination.

If he can remain fit throughout the campaign, he could again become one of the Premier League’s outstanding performers.

Morgan Rogers Makes Dream Chelsea League Debut

Chelsea’s record summer signing Morgan Rogers also made an immediate impact.

Rogers found the net after an excellent cutback from fellow debutant Maxence Lacroix.

The goal was particularly encouraging because it demonstrated the positional movement Xabi Alonso has been working on since taking charge.

Chelsea’s attacking players interchanged fluidly rather than remaining fixed in traditional positions.

That flexibility could become one of the defining characteristics of Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea.

Rogers adds physicality, ball-carrying ability and creativity, while Palmer provides invention and Joao Pedro offers movement across the frontline.

Together, they give Chelsea an attack capable of causing serious problems.

Alonso Already Putting His Tactical Stamp on Chelsea

Although this was only the first Premier League match of Xabi Alonso’s reign, there were signs that his tactical ideas are beginning to take shape.

Chelsea frequently rotated positions in possession, creating passing lanes and allowing attacking players to appear in areas Fulham struggled to defend.

The build-up to Rogers’ goal was a particularly good example.

Rather than relying simply on individual brilliance, Chelsea moved the ball through carefully coordinated positional changes before creating the decisive opening.

That should encourage Xabi Alonso.

But while Chelsea’s attack looked dangerous, their defensive performance demonstrated that significant work remains.

Chelsea’s Defensive Problems Have Not Disappeared

For all the excitement surrounding Chelsea going forward, Fulham repeatedly exposed weaknesses at the other end.

Levi Colwill endured several difficult moments.

After receiving a yellow card following a lapse in concentration, the defender risked further punishment with an unnecessary challenge on Josh King.

Against stronger opponents, those moments could prove costly.

Chelsea also struggled to maintain defensive control when Fulham increased the tempo.

Alonso will know that attacking quality can win individual matches, but challenging consistently for major trophies requires far greater defensive reliability.

Robert Sanchez Under Pressure After Another Uncertain Display

One of Chelsea’s biggest concerns remains goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

The 28-year-old made several avoidable mistakes.

Early distribution errors placed Chelsea under unnecessary pressure before Josh King beat him at his near post for Fulham’s first goal.

Sanchez left too much space available and was punished by King’s powerful effort.

Further uncertainty involving both Sanchez and Colwill contributed to Fulham’s second goal.

That will inevitably renew debate about whether Chelsea have a goalkeeper capable of supporting their ambitions.

For a club targeting the biggest domestic trophies, repeated errors in possession and positioning can become extremely damaging.

Chelsea’s attacking players rescued them at Craven Cottage.

They cannot expect that to happen every week.

Josh King Announces Himself as Fulham’s Next Rising Star

Fulham may have lost, but Josh King produced one of the most impressive individual performances of the match.

The 19-year-old England Under-21 international played with a maturity well beyond his age.

He drove Fulham forward from midfield, competed aggressively and showed the confidence to take responsibility in attacking positions.

His goal was superbly taken.

King struck powerfully and accurately enough to beat Sanchez at the near post, bringing Fulham level and changing the momentum of the match.

He nearly rescued a point later, dragging another effort narrowly wide.

If this performance is an indication of what is to come, Fulham may have one of the Premier League’s most exciting young midfielders.

Gonzalo Garcia Scores on Premier League Debut

Another encouraging development for Fulham was the performance of Gonzalo Garcia.

Signed from Real Madrid during the summer, Garcia immediately demonstrated the movement and penalty-box instincts that persuaded Fulham to bring him to England.

His close-range header gave the home side renewed hope and made him the first Fulham player to score on his Premier League debut since Chris David in May 2014.

Garcia’s arrival could prove extremely important.

Fulham need consistent goals if they are to build on recent seasons, and his intelligent movement suggests he could adapt quickly to English football.

Alvaro Arbeloa Can Take Encouragement Despite Defeat

Fulham manager Alvaro Arbeloa was also experiencing his first Premier League match in the dugout.

Interestingly, the fixture placed him against Alonso, the man he briefly succeeded at Real Madrid earlier in the year.

The result was disappointing, but the performance contained plenty of positives.

Fulham competed aggressively, created opportunities and repeatedly tested Chelsea’s defence.

They also refused to collapse after conceding inside the opening minute.

King and Garcia offered particular encouragement, while the team continued searching for an equaliser late into the match.

Arbeloa may feel his side deserved something from the contest.

Fulham’s London Derby Opening-Day Struggles Continue

The defeat extended an unwanted Premier League record for Fulham.

This was the fourth occasion they had started a Premier League campaign with a London derby.

They have now lost all four.

However, the result should not overshadow the quality of their performance.

Fulham were competitive against a Chelsea squad expected to challenge near the top of the table and had opportunities to earn a point.

The challenge now is to turn promising performances into results.

Chelsea’s Front Three Could Become One of the League’s Best

The biggest conclusion from Chelsea’s victory concerns their attacking ceiling.

Palmer, Joao Pedro and Rogers possess contrasting but complementary qualities.

Palmer can dictate attacks from central positions and produce decisive moments.

Joao Pedro is intelligent with his movement and capable of linking midfield with attack.

Rogers offers directness, strength and the ability to carry the ball through defensive lines.

Alonso can also rotate their positions during matches.

That unpredictability makes them extremely difficult to defend.

If Chelsea develop greater defensive stability behind them, this attacking trio could become one of the most dangerous in Europe.

Palmer Remains Chelsea’s Difference-Maker

Chelsea spent heavily during the summer and have assembled an impressive collection of attacking talent.

Yet Palmer remains the player who makes everything work.

His assist after 31 seconds immediately settled Chelsea.

His goal demonstrated his composure.

And throughout the match, his awareness repeatedly opened spaces for teammates.

Alonso acknowledged the significance of having Palmer operating at his best.

The challenge will be managing his workload carefully after fatigue affected him last season.

Chelsea need Palmer available when the biggest matches arrive.

A Winning Start, but Alonso Has Work to Do

For Xabi Alonso, the result provides exactly what every new manager wants: three points in the first league match.

It also provided valuable information.

Chelsea’s attacking potential is enormous.

Their movement is improving.

Their major summer signings are already making an impact.

But defensive concentration and goalkeeping remain areas of concern.

Those weaknesses may determine whether Chelsea merely entertain this season or genuinely challenge for the biggest trophies.

Against Fulham, the attack was good enough to compensate.

Future opponents may not be as forgiving.

What This Victory Means for Chelsea

Opening-day results should never be overanalysed, but Chelsea can take considerable confidence from the performance.

They won away from home.

Their record signing scored.

Their attacking structure looked promising.

And their most important creative player produced a man-of-the-match display.

After failing to win their opening league fixture in recent seasons, getting three points immediately also removes early pressure from Alonso.

The Spaniard can now continue implementing his tactical ideas from a position of confidence.

The Bigger Picture

Chelsea’s opening performance offered a glimpse of what their season could become.

At their best, the Blues looked dynamic, creative and difficult to contain.

Palmer was sensational.

Rogers made an immediate impression.

Joao Pedro provided another attacking threat.

But Fulham exposed enough defensive weaknesses to prevent anyone from declaring Xabi Alonso’s rebuild complete.

That may ultimately be what makes Chelsea such a fascinating team to watch this season.

Their ceiling appears extremely high.

Their attacking talent could overwhelm opponents.

But whether they can develop the defensive discipline required to challenge consistently remains unanswered.

For now, Xabi Alonso has his first Premier League victory.

And Cole Palmer has already reminded everyone why Chelsea’s ambitions may depend heavily on keeping their number 10 fit and firing.

Cole Palmer scored and assisted as Chelsea beat Fulham in Xabi Alonso’s first Premier League match, with Morgan Rogers also scoring on debut despite defensive concerns.
