Premier League 2026-27 Predictions: The 2026-27 Premier League season is shaping up to be one of the most unpredictable in recent years, with managerial changes, blockbuster transfers and major squad rebuilds transforming several of England’s biggest clubs.

But despite all the uncertainty, one team stands clearly above the rest in the pre-season predictions: Arsenal.

After ending their 22-year wait for a Premier League title last season, Mikel Arteta’s side are overwhelming favourites among BBC pundits to retain their crown. Manchester City are expected to provide the strongest challenge, while Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United are battling to establish themselves among the leading contenders.

So, who is best placed to win the Premier League in 2026-27, and which clubs could break into the Champions League places?

Of the 28 predictions considered – including BBC pundits, AI and Opta’s statistical model – 25 have Arsenal finishing first, while nobody expects them to finish below second. That represents an 89% backing for Arsenal to retain the championship, compared with only 17% who predicted their title triumph before last season.

The biggest reason is continuity.

While several rivals are changing managers or rebuilding their squads, Arsenal have retained Arteta and the core of the team that delivered the title.

They have also strengthened.

Bruno Guimaraes Makes Arsenal’s Midfield Even Stronger

The arrival of Bruno Guimaraes could prove one of the most important transfers of the summer.

Adding him to a midfield already containing Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi and Martin Odegaard gives Arteta extraordinary options.

Arsenal also possessed an outstanding defence last season, although William Saliba’s recovery following his World Cup injury remains an important situation to monitor.

There is, however, still one major question surrounding the champions.

Do they need another elite striker?

Some pundits believe Arsenal are already strong enough to retain the title, while others think signing a top centre-forward could turn them from domestic favourites into serious Champions League contenders.

Combining all 28 predictions using a scoring system that awards four points for first place, three for second, two for third and one for fourth produces a clear overall ranking:

Manchester United follow with 21 points, while Aston Villa and Tottenham receive only two points each.

The enormous gap between Arsenal and everyone else demonstrates just how strongly the champions are being backed.

The battle behind them looks considerably more difficult to predict.

Manchester City Begin Life After Pep Guardiola

Manchester City are entering a completely different era.

For years, predicting City as title contenders was almost automatic.

Pep Guardiola led the club through one of the most successful periods in English football history, winning six Premier League titles during his tenure.

Now Enzo Maresca has the enormous responsibility of succeeding him.

Only three of 26 BBC pundits – around 12% – expect City to reclaim the Premier League title this season.

That represents a dramatic shift in expectations.

It is not necessarily because City’s squad suddenly lacks quality.

Instead, the uncertainty surrounds how quickly Maresca can establish his ideas while overseeing one of the biggest midfield transitions the club has experienced in years.

Rodri’s Departure Leaves Manchester City With a Huge Problem

City are not simply replacing their manager.

They are rebuilding the midfield that powered their most successful era.

Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva and now Rodri are no longer part of the midfield structure that dominated English football.

Rodri’s departure is particularly significant.

His ability to dictate matches, protect City’s defence and control possession made him almost irreplaceable.

City are pursuing young Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi and have also shown interest in Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, but integrating new midfielders into Maresca’s system will require time.

Iraola’s aggressive, high-intensity football could fit Liverpool’s traditional identity extremely well.

If he successfully implements his pressing system, Anfield could once again see a style reminiscent of the high-tempo football associated with Jurgen Klopp.

Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz Could Transform Liverpool’s Season

Liverpool’s ceiling may ultimately depend on their biggest attacking stars.

Alexander Isak possesses the finishing ability to become one of the Premier League’s leading goalscorers.

Florian Wirtz, meanwhile, showed significant improvement towards the end of last season.

If both produce outstanding campaigns, Liverpool could potentially challenge Arsenal.

But squad depth remains a concern.

Some pundits believe Liverpool need defensive reinforcements, particularly because Iraola’s aggressive approach demands enormous physical output from his players.

Liverpool are also exploring attacking additions as they attempt to replace Salah’s output.

Whether they make another major signing before the transfer deadline could significantly alter expectations.

Chelsea Could Be the Premier League’s Wild Card

Chelsea might be the most fascinating team in the league this season.

Last year, every one of the 35 BBC predictions placed Chelsea in the top four.

They eventually finished 10th.

This time expectations are more restrained, although 21 of the 28 predictions still include them in the Champions League positions and five have them finishing second.

One major difference is the arrival of Xabi Alonso.

The former Real Madrid manager inherits a squad packed with attacking talent and, crucially, Chelsea do not have European football to distract them.

That gives Alonso significantly more time on the training ground.

Palmer, Rogers and Joao Pedro Could Be Devastating

Chelsea’s attacking potential is enormous.

A combination of Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro could become one of the most dangerous attacking units in English football.

Palmer and Rogers have already been used together as attacking midfielders during pre-season, potentially giving Chelsea two highly creative number 10s behind their forward line.

Chelsea have also added something their young squad previously lacked: experience.

Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson may be approaching the latter stages of their careers, but their leadership could become valuable inside a young dressing room.

If Alonso finds the right balance, Chelsea could become one of the season’s surprise title challengers.

Manchester United Could Return to the Top Four

Manchester United are another club attracting renewed optimism.

Michael Carrick transformed the team’s results after taking charge in January, with United topping the Premier League table based on matches played after his appointment.

That improvement helped them eventually finish third last season.

Now the challenge is maintaining those standards across an entire campaign while also competing in the Champions League.

Half of the predictions – 14 out of 28 – include Manchester United in the top four.

There are still concerns about squad depth and defence, however.

Youri Tielemans represents an important addition, while Marcus Rashford’s future could also have a major influence on Carrick’s attacking options.

If Rashford remains and rediscover his best form, United would effectively gain another elite forward without paying a transfer fee.

Aston Villa Face Their Toughest Test Under Unai Emery

Aston Villa are perhaps the clearest example of why predicting this season is difficult.

Unai Emery has transformed Villa into a major European force, but the club has been losing important players.

That squad turnover has created doubts about whether Emery can continue producing exceptional results while repeatedly rebuilding his team.

Some pundits still believe Villa’s biggest advantage is Emery himself, but Champions League football will place additional demands on a squad already undergoing significant change.

Villa may remain competitive, but breaking into the top four again could be considerably harder.

Could Tottenham Be the Surprise Package?

Tottenham are another potential outsider.

After two consecutive 17th-place finishes, expectations understandably remain cautious.

Nottingham Forest have been tipped by Troy Deeney as a potential breakout team despite losing Elliot Anderson.

Sunderland could also outperform expectations. After finishing seventh last season, their home form and ambitious ownership provide reasons for optimism, although European commitments could test their squad depth.

Leeds are another team expected to continue progressing after successfully surviving last season. Their willingness to invest – including approximately £40m on a goalkeeper – demonstrates ambitions beyond simply remaining in the Premier League.

Ipswich could also prove difficult opponents following significant recruitment after promotion.

AI and Opta Agree on the Premier League Champions

One of the most interesting aspects of this year’s predictions is the inclusion of artificial intelligence and Opta’s statistical model.

Microsoft Copilot was asked to predict the entire Premier League table.

Opta approached the problem differently.

Its model combines betting-market information with its own team power rankings and simulated all 380 Premier League matches 10,000 times.

Despite using completely different approaches, AI and Opta arrived at the same conclusion about the title winner – a view also shared by three of the human pundits.

That further reinforces the widespread confidence surrounding Arsenal.

Why Arsenal Start as Clear Favourites

The strongest argument for Arsenal is not simply that they won last season.

It is that while their biggest rivals are undergoing significant transitions, Arsenal are largely improving an already successful structure.

Manchester City have changed manager and are rebuilding their midfield.

Liverpool have changed manager and lost Salah.

Chelsea have another new manager and need to prove their enormous collection of talent can produce consistency.

Manchester United are improving but must balance domestic competition with Champions League football.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have Arteta, an established tactical identity, a title-winning core and further reinforcements.

That stability could prove decisive.

Premier League 2026-27 Title Race: What to Expect

The predictions overwhelmingly favour Arsenal, but football rarely follows the script perfectly.

The transfer window also remains open until 1 September, meaning several major deals could still change the competitive landscape. The original predictions were made on 20 August, with 13 days of the window remaining.

A transformative signing for Manchester City, Liverpool or Manchester United could narrow the gap.

Chelsea could emerge more quickly than expected under Alonso.

And injuries could completely reshape the title race.

On paper, however, Arsenal possess the strongest combination of continuity, quality, squad depth and recent success.

The champions are no longer chasing Manchester City.

For the first time in this Arsenal era, everyone else is chasing them.
