Real Madrid sign Diomande in deal worth up to £120m

Real Madrid have completed the signing of 19-year-old Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig in a deal that could eventually be worth £120m (€140m).

The teenager has signed a seven-year contract with the Spanish giants, underlining the club’s belief that he can become one of the leading attacking players of his generation.

If Real Madrid pay the full amount, Diomande’s transfer fee would exceed the £115m (€133.9m) they agreed to pay Borussia Dortmund for Jude Bellingham in 2023.

It would also place Diomande among the four most expensive footballers in history, behind Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Alexander Isak.

PSG beaten to the signing

Paris St-Germain had initially been considered the favourites to sign Diomande.

The Champions League holders had made a £102.5m offer, but RB Leipzig rejected the bid. PSG subsequently withdrew from the race on Sunday, opening the door for Real Madrid to complete the deal.

Liverpool had also shown strong interest in the winger. The English club reportedly had an initial £69m bid rejected by Leipzig as they looked for a replacement for Mohamed Salah.

Real Madrid’s willingness to pay considerably more demonstrates just how highly the club rates the teenager’s potential.

Another record for African football

The transfer also represents a major milestone for African football.

If the deal reaches its full £120m value, Diomande will become the most expensive African footballer ever.

He surpasses Ivory Coast compatriot Nicolas Pepe, for whom Arsenal paid Lille £72m in 2019.

The transfer is therefore significant not only for Real Madrid and Leipzig but also for the growing financial value being placed on elite African talent.

A remarkable rise at 19

Diomande’s career has developed at extraordinary speed.

Born in Ivory Coast, he moved to an academy in the United States before joining Spanish club Leganes in 2025. Later that year, he moved to RB Leipzig.

His breakthrough came during the 2025-26 Bundesliga season, when he was named the league’s Young Player of the Season.

He scored 12 Bundesliga goals and provided eight assists, while his overall figures across competitions stood at 13 goals and 10 assists.

His performances quickly attracted the attention of Europe’s biggest clubs.

World Cup experience already at 19

Despite his young age, Diomande has already represented Ivory Coast at the World Cup.

He played in all four of his country’s matches at the 2026 tournament before Ivory Coast were eliminated by Norway in the round of 32.

That experience is expected to help accelerate his development as he now moves to one of the biggest clubs in world football.

Real Madrid’s decision to spend such a substantial amount on Diomande reflects the club’s strategy of recruiting elite young players before they reach their peak.

That could give Diomande additional opportunities to attack from wide positions while benefiting from players capable of supplying him with passes in advanced areas.

Diomande becomes the sixth summer signing under new head coach Jose Mourinho, following the arrivals of:

Real Madrid are not simply buying a player for the present. The size and length of the contract suggest they see Diomande as a long-term investment.

At 19, he still has considerable room to improve physically, tactically and technically. His ability to operate on either flank gives Mourinho tactical flexibility, while his pace and direct style could provide another dimension to Real Madrid’s attack.

The major question will be whether Diomande can immediately adapt to the enormous expectations that come with playing for Real Madrid.

The £120m potential fee means the pressure will be significant. But if he develops as expected, Madrid could have secured one of Europe’s most promising young attackers before he reaches his prime.
