Man City

Man City are reportedly closing in on one of Europe’s most exciting teenage midfielders, with advanced talks under way for Lille star Ayyoub Bouaddi. But City’s midfield rebuild may not stop there, as Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez remains firmly on their radar.

Manchester City appear determined to completely reshape their midfield before the summer transfer window closes, with £85m-rated Ayyoub Bouaddi emerging as their latest major target.

The Premier League giants are in advanced negotiations with Lille over the 18-year-old Morocco international and reportedly want to complete a deal this week.

The move has become particularly important following City’s agreement to sell Rodri to Barcelona for around £65m.

But Bouaddi may not be the final piece of the puzzle.

Man City continue to hold an interest in Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, despite Chelsea’s expectation that the Argentina international will remain at Stamford Bridge.

If City somehow complete deals for both players, their midfield transformation would be extraordinary.

Man City in Advanced Talks for Ayyoub Bouaddi

Lille reportedly value Bouaddi at €100m, approximately £85.6m, reflecting the teenager’s rapid development into one of Europe’s most highly regarded young midfielders.

Paying that amount for an 18-year-old would represent a significant investment even by Man City’s standards.

Yet Ayyoub Bouaddi is hardly an ordinary teenager.

Despite his age, he has already accumulated considerable senior experience and demonstrated that he can perform on football’s biggest stages.

He has made 88 senior appearances for Lille since making his debut in October 2023, just three days after his 16th birthday.

Last season, he helped Lille finish third in Ligue 1.

Now Manchester City appear ready to make him a central figure in their post-Rodri midfield.

Why Manchester City Want Bouaddi

Bouaddi’s profile explains why City are prepared to consider such an enormous investment.

The teenager operates primarily as a deep-lying midfielder, capable of receiving possession under pressure, controlling the tempo and progressing the ball from defensive areas.

Rather than simply functioning as a defensive midfielder tasked with winning possession, Ayyoub Bouaddi can dictate play from deeper positions.

That makes him particularly attractive to a Manchester City side preparing for life without Rodri.

Replacing Rodri directly would be extremely difficult.

Instead, City appear to be building a midfield in which several players provide different qualities rather than expecting one individual to reproduce everything the Spanish midfielder offered.

Bouaddi could become the conductor at the base of that system.

Bouaddi Announced Himself Against Real Madrid

One of the performances that dramatically increased Bouaddi’s reputation came against Real Madrid in the Champions League in 2024.

Remarkably, the match took place on his 17th birthday.

Instead of appearing overwhelmed by the occasion, Bouaddi produced an assured midfield performance as Lille defeated the Spanish giants.

Supporters inside the Stade Pierre-Mauroy celebrated the youngster after the victory.

It became one of the defining early moments of his career and demonstrated something that has followed him throughout his development: Bouaddi rarely appears intimidated by the level of opposition.

From Teenage Prospect to World Cup Star

Ayyoub Bouaddi’s reputation grew even further at the 2026 World Cup.

The midfielder started five of Morocco’s six matches as the North African nation reached the quarter-finals.

Performing consistently at a World Cup at only 18 inevitably attracted attention from Europe’s wealthiest clubs.

For Manchester City, those performances offered evidence that Bouaddi may already be capable of handling the pressure associated with elite-level football.

He has spent much of his career competing against players considerably older and more experienced than himself.

That experience could make his transition to the Premier League smoother than might normally be expected from an 18-year-old.

Bouaddi Has Already Broken Records

Bouaddi’s rise has been remarkably fast.

He became Lille’s youngest-ever senior player when he made his debut shortly after turning 16 in 2023.

He later surpassed a record previously held by Chelsea and Real Madrid legend Eden Hazard by reaching 50 Ligue 1 appearances at just 18.

Those achievements demonstrate just how quickly Lille came to trust him.

For an outfield player to accumulate that level of experience before his 19th birthday is unusual.

And it helps explain the reported €100m valuation.

City would not simply be purchasing potential. They would be buying a teenager who has already accumulated substantial first-team, Champions League and international experience.

Rodri’s £65m Barcelona Move Changes Everything

Manchester City’s urgency in the transfer market is closely connected to Rodri’s expected departure.

The Spain captain is reportedly preparing to complete a £65m move to Barcelona, where he is expected to sign a four-year contract.

His departure would close one of the most successful chapters in City’s recent history.

Rodri joined Manchester City from Atletico Madrid in 2019 for what was then a club-record £62.8m fee.

Since then, he has made 298 appearances across seven seasons, becoming one of the most influential midfielders in world football.

His ability to control matches, protect City’s defence and contribute decisive goals made him fundamental to the club’s success.

Replacing that influence will be one of City’s biggest challenges.

Injuries Complicated Rodri’s Final Seasons at City

Rodri’s final years in Manchester were affected by injuries.

A serious knee problem caused him to miss much of the 2024-25 campaign, while a hamstring issue disrupted parts of the following season.

Yet he demonstrated his quality again at the 2026 World Cup.

Rodri captained Spain to their second World Cup title and was named player of the tournament.

That resurgence makes Barcelona’s move particularly significant.

City are losing an elite midfielder who appears capable of performing at the highest level despite the injury problems of previous seasons.

Elliot Anderson Already Part of City’s Midfield Revolution

Ayyoub Bouaddi would not be City’s first major midfield acquisition of the summer.

The club have already signed Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest.

Anderson offers a different profile.

He is capable of playing as a box-to-box midfielder while also operating in the number-six position he occupies for England.

That versatility could make him an important part of City’s new midfield structure.

A combination of Anderson and Bouaddi would give City two relatively young midfielders capable of developing together over several seasons.

But the club may have even bigger ambitions.

Manchester City Still Want Enzo Fernandez

Despite pursuing Ayyoub Bouaddi, Manchester City have reportedly not abandoned their interest in Enzo Fernandez.

The Chelsea midfielder would add another elite-level option to City’s midfield.

Fernandez is already a World Cup winner with Argentina and has significant Premier League experience.

His passing range, creativity and ability to progress possession could provide City with qualities that complement both Anderson and Bouaddi.

A midfield containing all three would represent an enormous investment but could also provide the foundation of City’s team for years.

Chelsea Do Not Want to Lose Fernandez

Signing Fernandez could prove considerably more complicated.

Chelsea reportedly expect the midfielder to remain at Stamford Bridge, particularly after their self-imposed deadline for receiving bids passed.

That position does not necessarily mean a transfer is impossible.

The summer window remains open until 1 September, leaving Manchester City with time to test Chelsea’s resolve.

The bigger question may be what kind of offer would convince Chelsea to reconsider.

Fernandez remains an important member of their squad, meaning City would likely need to make an exceptional proposal.

Enzo Maresca’s Interest Could Keep the Transfer Alive

City boss Enzo Maresca is reportedly still strongly interested in Fernandez.

That could ensure the story remains active until the transfer deadline.

The tactical attraction is understandable.

Fernandez could provide immediate experience and quality while Bouaddi develops further.

Anderson, meanwhile, offers athleticism and versatility.

Rather than finding a single replacement for Rodri, City could therefore rebuild the entire midfield around three complementary players.

It would represent a major change in strategy but potentially give Maresca considerably greater tactical flexibility.

What Would Bouaddi Bring to Manchester City?

The attraction of Bouaddi extends beyond his age.

His ability to operate at the base of midfield makes him particularly suited to a possession-dominant side.

City need midfielders comfortable receiving the ball while being pressed.

They also require players capable of moving possession quickly through midfield and maintaining control against teams defending deep.

Bouaddi has already demonstrated those characteristics at Lille.

The Premier League would represent another step in intensity and physicality, but his performances against elite opposition suggest he possesses the temperament to make that transition.

£85m for an 18-Year-Old Is Still a Major Gamble

There is, however, obvious risk.

A fee approaching £85m for an 18-year-old midfielder creates enormous expectations.

Ayyoub Bouaddi may have exceptional experience for his age, but he is still developing.

Moving from Lille to Manchester City would bring greater pressure, increased media attention and fierce competition for places.

There would also inevitably be comparisons with Rodri.

Those comparisons may be unfair, particularly considering Rodri’s achievements at City, but they would be difficult to avoid.

City would therefore need to give Ayyoub Bouaddi time to develop rather than expecting him immediately to become a direct replacement for one of the world’s best midfielders.

Manchester City Are Building for the Next Era

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of City’s transfer strategy is what it says about the club’s long-term plans.

Rodri’s departure creates an obvious hole, but City appear to be thinking beyond simply replacing one player.

Anderson offers versatility.

Bouaddi offers control and enormous potential.

Fernandez would provide proven elite quality and creativity.

Together, they could form the foundation of a completely redesigned midfield.

That would be an expensive transformation, but City appear prepared to invest heavily to remain competitive at the highest level.

What Happens Next?

The immediate priority is Ayyoub Bouaddi.

With negotiations reportedly at an advanced stage, Manchester City will hope to reach an agreement with Lille and complete the transfer quickly.

Attention could then return to Fernandez.

Chelsea’s current position makes that deal significantly more difficult, but with the transfer window remaining open until 1 September, there is still time for developments.

For City supporters, the final weeks of the window could therefore be fascinating.

Rodri’s departure represents the end of an era.

But if Manchester City can add Bouaddi – and potentially Fernandez – to a midfield already strengthened by Anderson, it could also mark the beginning of an ambitious new one.

Manchester City are in advanced talks to sign Lille’s £85m-rated Ayyoub Bouaddi following Rodri’s Barcelona move, while Chelsea star Enzo Fernandez remains a major transfer target.
