Mahama lauds IGP Yohuno and POMAB for effective yet low-profile crime-fighting efforts

President John Dramani Mahama has commended the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and members of the Police Management Board (POMAB) for their sustained and strategic efforts in tackling armed robbery, organised crime, and strengthening the operational capacity of the Ghana Police Service.

The President made these remarks at the official commissioning of the Odumase Krobo Laasi Divisional Police Headquarters, where he underscored the importance of strong leadership, discipline, and innovation in maintaining national security.

Recognition of quiet but impactful leadership

President Dramani Mahama described the current Police leadership as “quiet but very effective,” noting that although their work may not always attract public attention, the results are evident in improved security outcomes across the country.

“I also want to take this opportunity to commend the Inspector-General of Police and the Police Management Board, his leadership team, for their dedication to transforming the Police Service,” he said.

He added:

“This Police Management team has been quiet, they don’t make too much noise, but they are very effective.”

According to the President, the reduction in high-profile criminal activities and the increased confidence of citizens in law enforcement are clear indicators of progress being made.

Strengthening security infrastructure

The commissioning of the Odumase Krobo Laasi Divisional Headquarters forms part of broader efforts to decentralise policing and improve response times, particularly in growing communities.

President Dramani Mahama noted that investments in infrastructure are critical to modern policing, as they provide officers with the necessary environment and resources to operate efficiently.

He stressed that government remains committed to supporting the Ghana Police Service through continuous infrastructure development, logistics provision, and policy reforms aimed at enhancing professionalism and accountability.

Operational reforms and crime-fighting strategies

The President highlighted ongoing reforms within the Police Service, including intelligence-led policing, community engagement strategies, and enhanced inter-agency collaboration.

These measures, he said, are helping to dismantle criminal networks, prevent crime, and ensure a more proactive rather than reactive approach to law enforcement.

He also emphasised the importance of public cooperation, urging citizens to support the Police by providing timely information that can aid investigations and crime prevention.

IGP acknowledges government support

In his response, IGP Yohuno expressed appreciation to the President for his continued support and commitment to strengthening Ghana’s security framework.

He noted that government investment in retooling the Service—particularly the provision of armoured vehicles, communication equipment, and other logistics—has significantly improved the Police Service’s ability to respond to threats.

According to him, these resources have played a key role in foiling several robbery operations and enhancing officer safety during high-risk assignments.

Commitment to sustained improvement

The IGP reaffirmed the commitment of the Police Administration to sustaining the momentum in crime-fighting and deepening reforms within the Service.
