Marcus Rashford finally returned to action for Manchester United, but his comeback was overshadowed by a worrying 4-2 defeat to AC Milan that exposed several problems for Michael Carrick ahead of the new Premier League season.
Manchester United ended their pre-season preparations on a disappointing note after suffering a 4-2 defeat against AC Milan in Wroclaw, leaving manager Michael Carrick with plenty to consider before the Premier League campaign begins.
United twice went ahead but were unable to protect their advantage as Milan repeatedly found weaknesses in their defensive structure.
The result was particularly disappointing given that United are just one week away from opening their Premier League season away to newly promoted Hull City.
However, the afternoon was not entirely negative.
Marcus Rashford made his long-awaited return to Manchester United action, while Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martinez also made their first appearances of pre-season.
Manchester United Lose 4-2 to AC Milan
Pre-season results rarely define what happens during the competitive campaign, but the manner of United’s defeat will concern Carrick.
United had enjoyed an encouraging summer before facing Milan, but their final warm-up exposed defensive vulnerabilities that could become costly once competitive football begins.
Patrick Dorgu and Harry Maguire scored for United, but Milan responded strongly and eventually scored four times.
Three of Milan’s goals came from close range, highlighting United’s difficulties in defending dangerous areas around their penalty box.
One of those goals may have been ruled out for offside had VAR been available, but the broader defensive concerns remained.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek completed the scoring after breaking beyond Lisandro Martinez before beating goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
Lammens produced several important saves during the game and prevented the final score from becoming even more damaging.
Michael Carrick Admits United Were Not Good Enough
Carrick did not attempt to disguise his disappointment after the match.
The United manager acknowledged that his team had performed below expectations and insisted there were no excuses for the result.
That assessment will increase attention on how United respond when competitive football begins.
Their opening matches against Hull City and Ipswich Town should provide a much clearer indication of whether the problems exposed by Milan were simply pre-season imperfections or signs of deeper tactical weaknesses.
AC Milan Expose Manchester United’s Defensive Problems
One of the biggest concerns was United’s vulnerability when Milan switched the ball across the pitch.
AC Milan repeatedly found opportunities on their right side, forcing Luke Shaw to defend large amounts of space.
Shaw completed the entire match but frequently lacked sufficient support when Milan attacked his side.
United’s defensive and midfield lines were not dramatically separated, but the spaces between them were not protected effectively enough.
That allowed Milan to create dangerous opportunities and get players into threatening positions.
Carrick will need to address the issue quickly because Premier League opponents are likely to target similar weaknesses.
Andrey Santos Given a Difficult Test
The match was also a challenging afternoon for recent signing Andrey Santos.
The midfielder had impressed during much of United’s pre-season campaign, but Milan provided a much tougher examination.
His relative inexperience was more noticeable against high-quality opposition capable of exploiting mistakes quickly.
That does not necessarily undermine the positive performances Santos produced earlier in the summer.
Instead, the match demonstrated the level of consistency required if he is going to become an important part of Carrick’s midfield during the Premier League season.
Marcus Rashford Finally Returns for Manchester United
The biggest individual story of the match was undoubtedly the return of Marcus Rashford.
After approximately an hour, Carrick introduced the England forward as part of a group of six substitutes.
It marked Rashford’s first Manchester United appearance since December 2024, when he played against Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League.
His United career subsequently appeared to be heading towards an end.
After falling out of favour under former manager Ruben Amorim, Rashford spent time away from Old Trafford on loan, including spells with Aston Villa and Barcelona.
Few expected him to return and play for United again.
Yet there he was in Wroclaw, back in a Manchester United shirt.
Manchester United Fans Welcome Rashford Back
Rashford received a positive response from sections of the travelling United support.
During his warm-up, the forward acknowledged supporters with applause before eventually entering the match.
Once on the pitch, he showed occasional flashes of the ability that previously made him one of United’s most dangerous attacking players.
One particularly impressive moment near the corner flag saw Rashford beat an opponent with a clever piece of skill, drawing an enthusiastic response from supporters.
His overall performance was relatively quiet, but that was hardly surprising considering how long he had been away from United’s first team.
The important development was simply seeing him back on the pitch.
Rashford’s Manchester United Future Remains Uncertain
His return does not necessarily mean Rashford will remain at Old Trafford.
The transfer window closes on 1 September, leaving time for his situation to change.
Carrick has also stopped short of guaranteeing that the 28-year-old will be part of his squad beyond the transfer deadline.
That uncertainty was reinforced by Rashford wearing United’s vacant number nine shirt against Milan.
Club officials reportedly made clear that the number was only temporary rather than confirmation that Rashford would wear it permanently this season.
It leaves supporters with a fascinating question:
Has Marcus Rashford genuinely been reintegrated into Manchester United’s plans, or was this simply a temporary appearance before another transfer?
The next few weeks should provide the answer.

A Different Role for Rashford?
There were also tactical clues in how Carrick used Rashford.
After replacing Patrick Dorgu on the left, Rashford appeared to maintain a wider position than his teammate had occupied.
That allowed him to receive possession closer to the touchline and attack defenders directly.
If Carrick intends to keep Rashford, the England international could provide another option for a United attack that will need greater consistency during the new campaign.
Much will depend on whether Rashford can rediscover his confidence and establish himself within Carrick’s tactical system.
Bruno Fernandes and Youri Tielemans Complete 90 Minutes
There were other encouraging signs despite the result.
Captain Bruno Fernandes and Youri Tielemans both completed the full 90 minutes, providing an important fitness boost before the competitive season.
Lisandro Martinez and Kobbie Mainoo also returned to action.
United appear to have avoided any fresh injuries from the Milan defeat, which will be welcomed by Carrick.
However, Mason Mount remains a concern.
The midfielder initially suffered what appeared to be a minor foot problem during United’s pre-season fixture in Gothenburg.
Although the issue was initially considered precautionary, Mount has subsequently missed almost three full matches.
Given his impressive form earlier in pre-season, Carrick will hope to have him available again quickly.
Ruben Amorim Gets the Better of His Former Club
Adding another layer to the result was the presence of former United manager Ruben Amorim in the AC Milan dugout.
His Milan side ultimately punished the defensive weaknesses of his former club and ensured Carrick’s team finished their preparations with a heavy defeat.
The result will inevitably generate headlines because of Amorim’s previous connection to United.
However, Carrick’s priority will be what his team can learn from the match rather than the identity of the opposing manager.
What Manchester United Must Fix Before Facing Hull City
The defeat has highlighted several areas requiring immediate attention.
United need to improve their defensive coverage when opponents switch play, provide greater protection for their full-backs and prevent attackers from finding space between midfield and defence.
They must also defend their penalty area more aggressively after conceding several goals from close range.
The good news is that these problems have emerged before the competitive season rather than during it.
Carrick now has an opportunity to make adjustments before points are at stake.
Manchester United’s Pre-Season Ends With Questions
A 4-2 defeat is hardly the ideal way to conclude preparations for a new Premier League campaign.
However, pre-season is ultimately about fitness, experimentation and identifying weaknesses.
United achieved all three against AC Milan although Carrick would certainly have preferred the weaknesses to be less obvious.
The return of Marcus Rashford, Mainoo and Martinez provides reasons for optimism, while the absence of significant new injury concerns is another positive.
But the defensive performance demonstrated that there is still considerable work to be done.
Attention now turns to Hull City, where Manchester United’s Premier League campaign begins.
For Carrick, that match will provide the first meaningful indication of whether the lessons from the Milan defeat have been learned.
For Rashford, meanwhile, the coming weeks could determine whether his unexpected Manchester United comeback becomes the beginning of a new chapter at Old Trafford or one final appearance before another departure.
Marcus Rashford returned for Manchester United for the first time since December 2024, but AC Milan’s 4-2 victory exposed key problems for Michael Carrick ahead of the Premier League season.
