Professor David Spiegel of Stanford University notes that many individuals unknowingly breathe too quickly and too shallowly throughout the day.
Normal relaxed breathing is generally slow and rhythmic. However, stress, long working hours, poor posture, anxiety, excessive screen time, and constant mental stimulation often lead people to:
- Breathe rapidly
- Take shallow chest breaths
- Breathe through the mouth instead of the nose
- Hold tension in the diaphragm and shoulders
